The Black Bears dropped their home opener in the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor, 88-82 to the New Jersey Institute of Technology Highlanders, in what turned out to be a hard fought battle to the end. Despite a 13 point deficit at halftime, the Blackbears cut it to just 6 points at times, behind the scoring outburst of Dimitry Akanda-Coronel, who lit up the stat sheet in the second half. Unfortunately, the Highlanders would always answer back with a big run of their own, coming mainly from the shooting prowess of Damon Lynn, who shot 57% from behind the arc and only missed 1 free throw in the late minutes.

In fact, free throws may have been what won it for the Highlanders; in the second half, NJIT only missed 2 free throw shots, giving them almost 90% FT percentage, and sinking almost every single shot in the bonus in…

The University of Maine Men’s Basketball team (0-2) makes their way back to the Alfond tonight for their home opener against the visiting Brown University Bears (1-1), after falling to Holy Cross in a very close loss, 57-54. Top performers in that very close game included Alasdair Fraser who put up 21 points, 15 rebounds, and 4 blocked shots, and Xavier Pollard, who tied his career high total of 14 points, while grabbing 8 rebounds. Beyond that, the rest of the team struggled to get anything on the board, with key names like Justin Edwards and Mike Allison only putting up 2 points each, however Mike Allison added to the game defensively with his 2 blocks and Justin Edwards stole the ball 3 times and had 6 dimes.

Tonight the University of Maine Women’s basketball team plays their first home game tonight in Alfond Arena, battling against the visiting Syracuse Orange. The Black Bears are 0-2 coming into tonight’s game, losing both of their bouts in the Sheraton Raleigh Wolfpack Invitational hosted by NC State. Syracuse comes to Orono tonight winning their only game so far against Farleigh Dickinson 94-47.

Syracuse has the depth

The Syracuse Orange is coming off of a 22-15 overall record, despite  a losing conference record of 6-10, finishing 10th in Big East play. Syracuse returns this season with a really deep roster, only losing 2 seniors while bringing in 5 new freshmen. Some of the returning stars include Senior center Kayla Alexander, who led the team with 20 points and 10 rebounds in the bout against FDU. This past Wednesday the University of Maine men’s and women’s basketball teams had their annual media day in the Memorial Gym, affectionately known as “The Pit”, allowing the local media to get a little bit of a preview of the 2012-2013 rosters and strategies.

There was a lot of optimism amongst the players and the coaches that we interviewed, despite last years failures. Sophomore Guard for the men’s team Justin Edwards even went as far as to say “I expect us to go to the tournament this year.” A lot of optimism came from over the summer work, and the maturing of the young talented players we saw last year. Both coaches are looking for their returning players, including Sophomores and Juniors along with the Seniors, to help the incoming Freshman improve and learn new skills.

Both teams finished in the bottom of America East last year with losing records…
